Why Do Kids with ADHD Struggle with Transitions

Why Do Kids with ADHD Struggle with Transitions For many kids with ADHD the most difficult times of the day are those that happen when they are transitioning from one activity to another. At school, it may be when they are ending an academic period and getting ready to head to art class or to lunch. Or it may be during more subtle transitions, like when they are moving from circle time on the rug to classwork at their desk. At home, challenging transitions come up when a child needs to settle down for homework time after playing video games, or when they need to transition into their bedtime routine. Transitions are so much a part of our daily lives that they arent something we spend much time thinking about. In general, we tend to assume that transitioning between activities is something that is easy for kids, and it should go smoothly most of the time. In reality, transitioning between activities is anything but simple, especially for kids with ADHD. Why? Transitions tap into several cognitive skills simultaneously and these happen to be the very cognitive skills (or executive functioning skills) that are areas of weakness for kids with ADHD. Lets look at the different steps required for successful transitions and the cognitive skills associated with each step. Stopping an activity. Before a child can transition to a new activity they first need to stop the activity theyre doing already. This may seem simple enough, especially if the activity isnt particularly enjoyable. However, for kids with ADHD stopping or inhibiting an ongoing behavior can be very challenging. This is because the same cognitive skills that are used to put on the breaks and stop an impulsive behavior like calling out in class or grabbing something they want out of their friends hands, are the very same skills that they need to use when abruptly stopping an activity. Putting on the breaks more difficult at certain times than at others. Its particularly challenging when a child with ADHD is hyper-focused on an activity, when the activity is something thats particularly rewarding (like screen time), or when the upcoming activity is something they would prefer to avoid (like a writing assignment or bedtime). Starting a new activity. After a child with ADHD has successfully stopped his or her previous activity, he or she is now faced with the task of initiating a new one. This can be something fairly simple, like lining up by the classroom door, or something more complicated, like starting homework. Either way, it requires the child to tap into his or her cognitive skills related to initiating a new activity. For many kids with ADHD particularly those with the inattentive subtype - initiating a new activity can be overwhelming and exhausting. Not surprisingly, the less rewarding the new activity, the harder it is for a kid with ADHD to muster up the mental resources needed to get started on the new task. Following multi-step instructions (quickly). Starting a new activity often involves following multiple steps in a specific order. If the transition isnt routine, these steps can be a lot for a child with ADHD to process - especially if the instructions are presented verbally and very quickly. Why? Most kids with ADHD have weaknesses in either working memory (the ability to hold information in your short- term memory, and then manipulate this information in your mind) or processing speed (the ability to process information quickly). Some kids with ADHD have weaknesses in both areas. As a result, they may not have fully processed the necessary instructions making it nearly impossible for them to transition successfully. Managing a chaotic environment. Transition points are often the most chaotic times of the day. Imagine 25 kids shuffling papers, chatting with their neighbors, racing to their cubbies, grabbing all their things and lining up at the door for lunch. Now imagine trying to block out this noise while you struggle to stop your activity and follow a sequence of steps that youve only half-processed. When you look at from this perspective its easier to see why kids with ADHD literally get lost in the shuffle and struggle to follow through. Coping flexibly with changes in a routine. Not all transitions are planned. Things come up at school and at home that require kids to be flexible and adjust to a new routine on the fly. For kids with ADHD who struggle with cognitive flexibility, quickly wrapping their head around even small changes can be a big challenge. Managing frustration and emotions. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, dealing with transitions requires managing emotions and dealing frustration. Kids may feel upset because they dont want to stop the fun activity that theyve been doing. Or they may feel frustrated because they didnt have enough time to finish everything theyd hoped to accomplish. They may feel overwhelmed by all of the noise and activity in the room or feel a sense of dread about the upcoming activity. Regulating emotions and tolerating frustration are areas of weakness for most kids with ADHD. Compared to other kids their same age, its not uncommon for kids with ADHD to have emotion regulation skills that are about 2 years behind. This means that at times of transition, the expectations placed on a childs emotional capacity may exceed their actual ability level. Understanding the underlying challenges that make it difficult for kids with ADHD to navigate transitions throughout the day is the first step in ultimately making transitions easier for the child (as well as their parents and teachers). In my next post Ill provide concrete steps you can take to provide the support a child with ADHD needs to transition between activities successfully. ABOUT DR. Ten Awesome Memory Techniques for Standardized Test Taking

Ten Awesome Memory Techniques for Standardized Test Taking Improving Academic Performance Sometimes test preparation requires memorization. For example, the SAT and GRE require building your vocabulary. Here are some tried and true memory techniques. The Roman Technique This technique involves setting what you want to remember to the layout of something you’re very familiar with, like your childhood home or route to school. So imagine, for example, that you want to remember your to-do list. Say your first item was to telephone the GRE board to set your test appointment. You might visualize your front door opening but having tons of phones blocking the passage way. Say your second thing on your to-do list is to buy paper. You could imagine your hallway with paper in the picture frames instead of the portraits that normally went there. The idea is to walk through your home putting what you want to remember along the route. Because our spatial memory is more long term memory versus short term memory, this helps us organize and remember the data. Study in the Same Place Studies have shown that studying in the same place where you take the test helps memory. We know this isn’t possible for the tests like the GRE and SAT. Luckily, just imagining the place you usually study while taking the test can help you remember the material you were studying. Take Frequent Breaks Researcher has shown that you remember the beginning and end of studying the most, so by taking a break every 20 minutes or so there can be multiple beginnings and ends. Chunking Chunking involves lumping things together when you can. For example, is it easier to remember 3-1-7-2-1-4 or think 3/17 and 2/14- St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day? Practice Retrieving the Memory Recent research has shown people remember things best when they practice retrieving the memory. The retrieval of memory leads to better memorization than focusing on storing the memory. Make the Memory Bizarre It is easier to remember something if you think of something strange. For example, if you want to remember the left anterior descending artery on the heart, you could picture a bunch of young boys (“LAD”s) crawling all around the heart. Use All of Your Senses If you are trying to learn something, bring as many senses into it as you can. How does it look, feel, smell, sound etc.? Focus On What You’re Trying to Learn It takes eight seconds of extreme concentration on average to imprint a memory. Make sure you study somewhere with very little distractions so that you can focus completely on what you are trying to learn. Rhyme Rhyming the information makes it easier to memorize. For example, if you were trying to memorize the definition of alacrity (which is cheerful readiness) you might think: “Someone with alacrity has the capacity to do tasks happily and succeed academically and financially.” Know the Key Points Research has shown that outlining can help a lot with memorization because it boils down the information to key points. It can also be helpful to have an image with the most important points exaggerated or use a different color for the most important points. hbspt.cta._relativeUrls=true;hbspt.cta.load(215486, '6baac2ae-05a3-4610-9d1f-265c8cbd809f', {});

5 Reasons to Not Buy the New iPhone 5

5 Reasons to Not Buy the New iPhone 5 Photo by medithIT via Flickr.com 2)  It’s not an innovative technological upgrade After the presentation for the iPhone 5 was over, many technology journalists scratched their heads, asking, “Is that it?” While the new iPhone is an improvement over past iterations, there is no significant jump in technology. The presentation showed nothing new, groundbreaking, or innovative. There was no Siri or vastly improved camera features. iOS6 isn’t a major upgrade over iOS5. Quadcore processors? Welcome to 2011, Apple. It’s a new phone, but technically, at this point, it’s just playing catch up with Android. 3)  Samsung may be suing Apple While Apple has been busy collecting the billion dollars won in a patent-infringement case against Samsung, it looks like Samsung might be looking to retaliate. Samsung seems to be making the claim that Apple has infringed on their patents concerning 4G LTE technology. What does this mean for the consumer? While we don’t know the full extent of what could happen, it’s certainly possible that the iPhone 5 could be pulled from stores just like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. 4)  The design is outdated While the new iPhone is thinner and lighter than its predecessors, it’s still the same old iPhone design. For a company that prides itself so much on ingenuity and balance in design, this is really becoming stale. It’s not a companywide movement; however, just take a look at the constantly evolving iPod Nano line. While the screen size has finally been enlarged, at 4”, it’s still a tiny screen compared to most competitors’ phones. 5)  The iPhone 4S is still a great phone With the release of the iPhone 5, the 4S will likely see a price drop. If you really want an iPhone that bad, it’s probably worth it to just get the 2011 model. It doesn’t have 4G LTE, but it’s got Siri, a great camera, and a rock-solid operating system. The iPhone 5 simply is not a good enough improvement to justify its price.

Who Is Included In Inclusive Illinois

Who Is Included In Inclusive Illinois Source: http://www.maths.leeds.ac.uk/undergraduate/study-abroad/partner-institutions.html There has been a lot of talk about “Inclusive Illinois” in the past year, and it has sparked a debate on what this slogan means, and how we can bring it to life here at the University of Illinois. Last January the university made national news (and Buzzfeed’s highlight reel) when students angry about the lack of a snow day sent out racist tweets about Chancellor Wise. The Chancellor graciously replied that although the tweets were offensive, and far less than she would expect from students, they were a form of protected speech. It was important, she said, that the university “should be home to diverse ideas and differing perspectives, where robust â€" and even intense â€" debate and disagreement are welcomed.” Fast-forward six months to the controversy surrounding the hiring of Professor Steven Salaita, when Dr. Salaita was “unhired” for posting tweets denouncing the Israeli bombing of Gaza. Inclusive Illinois was invoked on both sides of the controversy. Pro-Israel activists denounced Salaita as an anti-Semite (ironic given that several of the tweets were directly about overuse of that label) and said they would feel unsafe if he was on campus. On the other side proponents of academic freedom called for a university that would respect all views, reminding Chancellor Wise of her statements about diverse ideas and different perspectives made in January. Questions of donor influence, the opinions of Palestinian Americans, faculty hiring procedures and the difference between personal and professional spheres erupted into a protest movement that has put the university on the defensive in these recent months. At the center of all of these questions- what does it mean to be inclusive? Who are we including? What is diversity? This month the Students for Justice in Palestine Club has held several meetings about bringing Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (commonly referred to as BDS) against Israel to campus in response to the recent conflict in Gaza. Two days after their first meeting, a resolution was on the floor of the student senate to disallow any BDS campaigns on the grounds that they violated the principles of Inclusive Illinois, despite the fact that traditionally boycotting has been one of the most famous forms of non-violent protest (think Montgomery Bus Boycott). I don’t have the ultimate answer to what Inclusive Illinois means, or what it should. On all of these (and the many other) issues that we face as a university, there are widely differing viewpoints. But I think its time we sat down and realized that Inclusive Illinois is quickly becoming little more than a cute alliteration. It is continuously co-oped for the purposes of the person speaking, with little deeper investigation of a commitment by the university community to diversity, including a diversity of ideas. The use of Inclusive Illinois to justify or deride every decision on campus in the last semester has simply served to water it down. Now what was once a goal and a promise has become little more than a slogan. 3 Tips for Success in an Online Course

3 Tips for Success in an Online Course Photo by rawpixel.com from Pexels Highlight Deadlines The first thing you should do when taking an online class is find, highlight, and mark down when your deadlines are. You need to know when every assignment is due by and when every quiz or test must be taken. You need to make sure no deadline slips by you, which is very easy to have happen in an online course because you do not have professors and TA’s reminding you daily of upcoming deadlines. It is up to you to get it all set up and get it done. There is almost no worse feeling when taking an online course than failing an assignmentâ€"not because you actually did poorly on itâ€"but simply because you failed or forgot to actually do it. Time can go by so quickly in an online course because you are, of course, doing other things. You do not want to be surprised by a deadline, thinking you had more time to get a task completed and then being unable to finish it on time or at all. And this does not just include actual assignments, but any task you need to complete in the course. Do you have to sign up for a time to take your exam? Is there a deadline for when you can sign up for the exam? Mark it down and make sure you do not miss the deadline to sign up for your exam. How awful would it be to tank your exam simply because you never signed up for it on time? However you need to highlight your deadlines so that you remember it, do it. Write it down in your plan, or leave yourself reminders on your phone, or set it in your google calendar so that it will automatically remind you. Whatever will work best for you, do it. And set it up at the very beginning of the course so that nothing slips by you. Set Aside Time Another way students often fail themselves when taking an online course is not setting aside time for themselves to actually get the work done that is required of them. You have a set time put aside every day to attend your classâ€"you should set aside a specific time every day to get your coursework done for your online classes as well. Online classes are not just assignment after assignment. You often have readings to do or video lectures to watch. If you wait until the last minute to even see what you have due, you may not have the time to get your work done before its deadline. By setting aside time specifically devoted to completing your online coursework, you are much more likely to get it done. It could be the same time every day, or you could devote specific days of the week to your online course. Whatever you find most effective, or the most effective time to get your work accomplished, you should do. Photo by bruce mars from Pexels Do Not Wait A lot of these tips have to do with time management, because time management is the thing that students enrolled in online courses struggle with the most. Whatever you do while taking an online course is not to wait until the last minute to do or turn in an assignment. What if you get to an assignment the night before it is due and find there are many, many steps to it that you were unaware of and that there is no possible way you can get the assignment done in time? What if you missed the window to sign up for your final exam and now are ineligible to even take it? What if it’s 11:50 p.m., your assignment is due at midnight, and your online course platform is having technical issues? Or it is storming so your WiFi connection is not strong enough for you to upload your assignment? Or your mom accidentally spilled coffee on your laptop, which is the only place you have the file for your assignment? Avoid any of these potential disasters and just get your stuff done and in on time.

Chemistry Worksheet and Phase Changes - Effective Teaching For a Quick Assessment

Chemistry Worksheet and Phase Changes - Effective Teaching For a Quick AssessmentJust as learning chemistry can give students a new way to learn science, learning chemistry also helps children adjust to the world of science. When looking for an instructional program that will help students with their learning experience, be sure to choose one that can assist students in understanding the workings of a periodic table. Children are generally more comfortable learning about the periodic table through an interactive science process. There are many methods available to teaching and learning science to young children.Science teachers who use phase changes worksheet chemistry will begin by establishing a syllabus. The curriculum should go beyond basic concepts of physics and focus on how different elements interact. For example, from the phase changes worksheet, the teacher can construct a periodic table with its chemical properties and explain the attributes that would occur in each elemen t when it is in its right position.Teachers will then use this learning process in real life. For example, if students have been learning about the periodic table, they will most likely be asked to answer questions about these materials. Students will also be shown how the periodic table would look if various elements were in a particular place in it. They can then get their own periodic table in a classroom setting.Science students who learned through this approach could also apply these ideas in their own work. If a student sees an element in a specific place, he or she might have a way to learn more about that element. Science teachers might also use this approach in their science lessons and teach students how to create their own periodic table based on materials available in the classroom.One advantage of using worksheets to teach science students is that they can be used both in the classroom and outside the classroom. When students are assigned a science lesson, they can star t by learning by doing by using these worksheets.This approach also helps science teachers avoid having to design curriculum around the structure of periodic tables. They can simply let the student to construct his or her own workbook to introduce them to the element and learn more about it.As with any instructional activity, science teachers can find more efficient ways to deliver science lessons. It is important to find one that can be used in every subject and every grade level, so that students can learn to properly interpret the information they get from it.

SimCity 3 is Tutoring Faster

SimCity 3 is Tutoring FasterSimCity 3 is a great game to play for a great number of reasons. There is a decent bit of moral instruction that players will need to learn if they are going to have a chance at completing the game on a higher difficulty level. Let's go over the main area that the game covers and see if SimCity 3 is Tutoring Faster.If you buy SimCity you need to build a lot of houses, schools, hospitals, factories, and so on. Once you do that, there is a lot of other stuff you have to complete as well such as implementing roads, parks, airports, and so on.The first part of SimCity is to make all of these things, and after that you will need to have ways to irrigate your own water intake systems, and it can be kind of hard to keep those intakes filled with water at one time. After this, you will also need to make your own power. This is another vital part of building cities that players really want to have done properly.SimCity is not the only game that you can use to keep up on this. As you can see from the name, however, some games are better than others. There are games out there that you can download to get ideas on what things are and aren't essential for the game, and then you can learn from them to get your SimCity game up and running properly.If you think SimCity is a great game and you think that it is in the ball park to be the next good selling product in the US, you may also want to watch for the information on the Internet that players have to find on the Internet. Even if it is available to you on DVD's, you may still want to check out the Internet on how people have been able to make their SimCity games to do better at them.But if you don't have the time or the patience to sit down and learn how to do this, you can always make SimCity easier by tweaking the settings. There are mods out there that can add new buildings, streets, roads, bridges, sewage pipes, water and power to your game. With the right mod, SimCity will be Tutoring Faste r in no time.SimCity is a fun game to play, and it is also a great game to get ideas from the Internet on how to do things differently. Sims 3 is a great game to use when you are trying to make SimCity even better.
